On paper, this looks like ‘nah-dee’ but there’s actually a silent ‘n’. The capital of Fiji is actually pronounced ‘nahn-dee’.

There are many weirdly pronounced cities in the UK like Gloucestershire, Durham and Buckingham. But the one city name most get wrong is Edinburgh. The beginning is as you’d imagine, ‘eh-din’, but rather than ending in ‘burg’ (like an iceberg), it’s pronounced ‘brah’.

To this day, this one grinds my gears the most – probably because it’s such a popular destination for Aussies. Not all languages pronounce ‘ph’ as a ‘feh’ sound and the same goes for Phuket. Imagine the ‘h’ isn’t there and say ‘poo-ket’: simple.

If there’s one language that has complicated pronunciations, it’s French. This town in the French Riviera looks deceptively simple but is often said incorrectly. Firstly, the ‘s’ is silent, so imagine it isn’t there. Instead of pronouncing it ‘can’ or ‘canes’, it’s said ‘kahn’ and rhymes with the Vietnamese roll, Banh Mi.

Instead of saying ‘due-bye’, the city and Emirate it’s actually pronounced ‘doo-bye’.

Many will say the correct way to pronounce Laos is to rhyme with house or blouse, but when you’re there, you’ll notice locals say ‘lao’, rhyming with cow. It’s believed the ‘s’ isn’t pronounced after it was colonised by the French, but in reality the Lao language doesn’t have a final s sound.

Don’t be tempted to say ‘Mall-dives’, the dives apart is actually pronounced ‘deeves’: ‘mall-deeves’.

Often confused with Nigeria, Niger is a completely different country and pronounced completely differently too. To break it down, start by saying ‘knee’ then adding ‘zherr’ for the second syllable to rhyme with Pierre or there.

The country is often pronounced as Americans say it, which is ‘eye-rack’ (and incorrect). Instead, it’s say ‘ee-raahk’ with an elongated ‘ah’ sound.

This one does not rhyme with Vegemite. It’s pronounced ‘yo-seh-muh-tee’ and rhymes with yeti.

Perhaps the most mispronounced landmark is the Louvre – everyone’s got it up until the v. Forget rolling the impossible French ‘r’, and instead say ‘lou-vruh’. If that’s too complicated, just say ‘Loo-ve’, people will know what you mean.

This is particularly complicated because it has two tricks. The first is the silent ‘s’ at the end and the second is the double L which in French produces a ‘yuh’ sound rather than L. The correct way to say Marie Antoinette’s former residence is ‘vuh-sai’, rhyming with eye.

Montjuïc is a hill in Barcelona with loads to see including a castle, 1936 Olympic stadium, museums and a stunning fountain. Translating to ‘Jewish Mountain’ in Catalan, to pronounce it correctly, call it ‘mon-djue-ick’.
