In a bid to stay ahead of the premium airline boom, Singapore Airlines has unveiled an entirely new cabin for its fleet of A380 planes. The redesign, which has been in the works for four years, now allows for 471 passengers across four classes including six first class suites that have to be seen to be believed. Seated on the upper deck, the suites offer privacy from the pressures of air travel and include a separate full-flat bed (couples have the option to combine theirs into a double bed) that can be stowed away for more space as well as a separate reclining seat. The suites also feature 32″ screens, a full-sized personal wardrobe, custom carpet and mood lighting on feature walls. Not stopping there, the first-class ticket also provides passengers with two exclusive bathrooms (one of which features a sit-down vanity counter). The new cabin also updates the existing business class offering, with luxurious seating (25″ in width) that also converts into a full-flat bed. To enhance personal space larger back shells have been installed on seats and dividers for passengers in the centre row can be removed to combine beds into a double for families or couples. The new cabin offering also extends to premium economy with each seat measuring 19.5″ in width that can now recline to 8″. New inclusions include a calf rest that provides greater comfort and improved stowage space for personal items. New ergonomic designs and advanced technology have also meant economy class seats now also boast more legroom and back support. New features found in economy include a patented non-intrusive reading light and adjustable footrest. Fitting out the entire fleet though wasn’t cheap. Singapore Airlines have spent more than 1.1 billion including retrofitting 14 existing aircraft. Perhaps this really is proof that it’s the journey, not the destination that truly counts.
