Virgin Galactic has shared a glimpse inside the luxury spacecraft that will soon ferry the first private citizens into orbit. The SpaceshipTwo vehicle, which has been dubbed VSS Unity, is set to launch its first commercial service later in the year. A service which has room for the very first six space tourists.

Images from inside the ultra-luxe Virgin Galactic craft showcase futuristic circular windows, angled cabin seating and galactic halo lighting, which are all aimed at providing travellers with as many different viewpoints as possible, offering “safety without distraction.”

The cabin layout aims to optimise an “unrestricted float zone” for passengers during the spacecraft’s time in zero gravity. Cabin seats are angled backwards and crafted from aluminium and carbon fibre, with specially sourced fabric for the seats and passenger spacesuits coming courtesy of a partnership between Virgin Galactic and American sports giant Under Armour.

According to Virgin Galactic, as many as six hundred “future astronauts” have already signed up to take part in the space travel program, with many of them noting that securing photography and video footage of their experience was of critical importance: a factor which heavily influenced the design of the spacecraft’s interior, including sixteen cameras placed both externally and internally throughout the craft.

Circular multi-coloured LED lighting at the windows is designed to reflect different colours during varying flight stages, however once the spacecraft reaches the height of its journey, all of the cabin lights are darkened to allow complete immersion in the incredibly spectacular surroundings.

The SpaceshipTwo craft approaches take off and landing in exactly the same way as traditional aircraft, through the use of a runway. The vessel took its first sojourn into space two years ago, in 2018, after being successfully testing in 2013.

Eventually, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson says he hopes to give thousands of people “like you and me” the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience space travel. According to the Telegraph, Mr Branson declined to give specific ticket prices, however he did say they would be increased due to massive demand. While the dates for the spacecraft’s launch have not yet been named, they are surely destined to go down in the history of travel while the world watches on.
