Go hard or go home.

“Better for you” booze options are going gangbusters. From non-alcoholic wines and spirits to lower ABV alternatives, thirsty punters are embracing this new wave of bevvies with the enthusiasm of a schnauzer with a Schmacko. And according to recent analysis by various number crunchers, the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

One of the standout performers in this growing market is hard seltzer. And US brand White Claw has clawed its way to the top of the pack, with a massive market share. Now, the brand has topped up the alcohol on its latest offerings Down Under, just in time for summer.

White Claw Surge contains an ABV of 6.5%, up from 4.5% on the original. Higher than most hard seltzers, but less than an average glass of wine. So you can enjoy one or two without worrying about waking up two days later in another state, with a lampshade on your head.

The new seltzers come in two of the most popular flavours in the US: Blackberry and Blood Orange. But there is a caveat: more alcohol equals more calories – Surge contains 220 calories per 330ml can, compared to 95 for the standard White Claw seltzers. However, the carb-phobic among you can take heart – Surge is still low carb, containing only 2g carbs per can, so you can indulge with relative impunity.

White Claw Surge will be available nationwide from Monday, November 14 at bottle shops and bars. RRP $30 for a 4-pack.
