Eat Out

Eat your greens takes on whole new meaning in MasterChef colour challenge

Cucumber

Enough with the cucumber desserts already!

It is officially the final night of Beat the Brigade, which means it’s the last chance for Melbourne’s top chefs to embarrass themselves by losing to a bunch of home cooks in their first-ever service challenge.

It may be past their bedtime, but you’ll want to bring out the kids for this one. Tonight we’re learning about colours.

A team of contestants from the MasterChef kitchen will battle it out against Jason Staudt and his team from Stokehouse in St Kilda in a game of “what colour is this?”

Melissa explains each course must champion a different colour, with the two teams choosing red for entrees, yellow for mains and green for dessert.

Leading the turquoise team (or is it aquamarine?) is Sabina as team captain, along with Justin, Pete, and Amir.

Colour challenge

The challenge sounds easy enough, but as it turns out, no one can tell the difference between red, orange and purple.

It gets so bad that Justin has to get a carrot from the crisper to compare it to his dish. He can’t work out if he’s colourblind or it’s just a pigment of his imagination.

Where’s Tommy? We need the kindergarten teacher in here to help clear a few things up.

The MasterChef contestants manage to get their dish redder than the Stokehouse chefs, so they win the first round.

Then it’s on to the mains. Each team must make a dish inspired by the colour yellow. And by inspired, Jock means, it has to be really, really, really yellow.

Both teams go for poached fish with turmeric, with the team of pro chefs knocking the contestants out of the water.

And to finish up, it’s green for dessert.

As we all know, there’s no shortage of great green ingredients. There’s mint, lime, matcha, kiwifruit and pandan, to name a few, but no. The MasterChef contestants decide to go with cucumber.

And we’re not just talking cucumber granita but thick rounds of cucumber, the kind you put in salad, which are watered down with cucumber tea. They serve it with yoghurt cream and dill fronds, making, what is essentially, a bowl of tzatziki.

Turns out, the judges must be sick of cucumber desserts too as they award the prize to Stokehouse for their infinitely more impressive pistachio and white chocolate mousse dome with desert lime gel and apple and tarragon sorbet.

While the turquoise/teal/cyan team don’t win today, Jock applauds their excellent teamwork and names Sabina as the most impressive team captain so far.

Join us on Sunday night for a relay team challenge to see which contestant goes rogue (we’re betting on Tommy).
