The morning coffee break just took a super sweet turn.
A twist on a classic, a food hype designed to grab eyeballs, and how the hell do you even approach eating, or is that drinking, the Cuppa Nut? All valid questions when considering the aforementioned doughnut-meets-morning-joe; available on a strictly limited supply from Jessie’s Cafe & Roasting Co in Perth’s Myaree.
“I can’t claim the idea,” says owner Jess Del Fante. While she says they were certainly looking for a “food hype”, they were after something that would complement what they do as well as their collaborator, Top Dup Donuts. It was David Bignell, former barista and founder of feted artisanal maker Top Dup Donuts who floated the idea of the Cuppa Nut.

“He created a doughnut shell and lined it with chocolate, and then we had a play with it to see if we could make it work properly,” says Del Fante. “We’ve got pretty strong baristas on board, and they nailed it.”
As you’re dealing with chocolate and heat there’s an element of technique, as with a Tim Tam Slam.
“It holds really well because the inside is lined with the chocolate,” says Del Fante. “We pour the single shot in, the milk, and serve it with a straw. Then it’s just, indulge and enjoy. Once you finish the coffee it’s all melted and the flavour melts its way through the doughnut.”
As to the feedback, Del Fante says, “you never know when you do these things how it’ll be taken but everyone’s pretty much said, that’s delicious and it’s gone a little mad at times.”

Supply is limited, served only on a Wednesday; a hump day gift to the growing band of fans.
“We get our first delivery from David at 7am, and normally that will be a batch of around 50, and then he’ll swing back around mid-morning, around 10am for another drop off,” she says.
What started as an attention grabber that could have been short lived Del Fante says, “it’s got some legs that’s for sure.”
From what could now be termed as the original incarnation, being topped up with coffee, they are now adding hot chocolate, and chai.

“We’re kind of open to putting anything in there,” she says. “The other week we thought ‘what about affogato?’ A scoop of ice cream and then a double shot of coffee. Even in the cooler months we figured when do you not like an affogato?”
The experiments continue says Del Fante, but for now doughnut lovers should mark Wednesday mornings in Myaree for their weekly Cuppa Nut fix.
