Nothing is off-limits on the super indulgent menu that includes fried chicken sandwiches, pink lamingtons and peanut butter cheesecake.
Ditch the tummy ache and none of the flavour at Marrickville’s new gluten-free kid on the block, Gluten Free Friends (GFF). Brought to us by the genius team behind Redfern’s Donut Papi, Kenneth Rodrigueza, Karen Rodrigueza and Chris Palamara, this new bakery is set to be a safe haven for coeliacs.
Born of necessity, the second venue from the Donut Papi duo, GFF fills a void for Palamara, who is allergic to gluten himself. After launching late in April to the delight of gluten-free folks the city over, the Rodrigueza siblings and Palamara are uncompromising when it comes to the bakery and its fast food staples. Chewy and fluffy Turkish bread sandwiches, fried chicken, and fish sandwiches top the list of tummy-pleasing menu items seriously delivering the goods. Just make sure to leave space for a sweet treat.

There’s the pretty-as-a-picture pink coconut lamington, with a glacé cherry perched on top; or perhaps the cookies in chocolate chip or rainbow sprinkles are more your speed? For us, it has to be the verdant hit of pistachio butter cake complete with crema de pistachio and fresh green pistachio slivers.
Wanting to create their own take on US chains like fried chicken moguls Popeyes, as well as New York-based Milk Bar, the team aims to bring a worry-free, convenient and delicious fast food option to anyone avoiding gluten for any reason. Walking into a fast food restaurant can be a dicey affair for folks living with dietary restrictions, so the pair have gone to great lengths to ensure their suppliers take every measure to avoid cross-contamination.

Ken Rodrigueza tells delicious., “We’ll be offering products such as fried chicken burgers, nuggets and chips. Rather than mass-produced fast food, however, the food we are serving is prepared with love in our kitchen and freshly made to order.”

While the team is fleshing out the full menu – including those chicken sandwiches from just $8 – which will launch mid-May, we’ll just have to make do with the display of takeaway chocolate crinkles (the lovechild of a cookie and a cake, dusted in icing sugar), fairy bread doughnuts, and the seriously OTT peanut butter chocolate cheesecake.
