MasterChef's Reynold Poernomo to bring his famed dessert bar to Melbourne

Koi Dessert Bar celebration cakes

Bring your sweet tooth and some stretchy pants.

Bona fide lord of desserts and MasterChef alumni, Reynold Poernomo will head south this month to open Melbourne’s first Koi Dessert Bar.

The pastry chef dazzled audiences back in 2015 on MasterChef as he created mind-bending pastries and desserts. Poernomo’s skills only grew in the years following his debut, as did his dessert empire. Alongside brothers Ronald and Arnold, Reynold opened Koi Dessert Bar in Sydney and hosted a series of pop-ups and collaborations.

Now, six years later, the brothers are finally giving Melburnians a taste. The Collins Street bakery will feature an evolving line-up of 150 different desserts including (sorry, Sydney) six desserts that will be exclusive to Melbourne.

Koi Melbourne will join a swag of new restaurants – including Maurice Terzini’s new venue, Purple Pit – at the new Queen & Collins precinct and will have laboratory-like touches from white walls to marble counters and a display cabinet worthy of an art gallery.

On offer will be an absolute wonderland of desserts, from mind-bending banana cakes (cakes, shaped like bananas, of course), to celebration cakes that put your Women’s Weekly classics to shame.

Flavours of pandan, coconut, mango and ume blend Southeast Asian flavours with cutting-edge and classic French pastry techniques to create something unique to the Poernomo brothers.

An experiential dine-in area will be headed up by KOI pastry chef, Adeline Campestre, in which guests will observe the bakers in action as they munch their way through some seriously stunning sweet treats.

Do I need to book for Koi Dessert Bar?

If you’re heading in for coffee and cake, no reservation is needed (but expect lines) however if you want a seat in the experiential dining space, you will need to book online.

KOI Melbourne will open at 100 Queen Street, Melbourne on July 19. For more details head to the KOI Dessert Bar website.
