Casualties include historic ramen joint, Gumshara, which is yet to find a new site.

Haymarket’s iconic Eating World is slated for demolition this week, joining the already fallen Dixon House food court as part of a $63 million refurbishment of the Chinatown area.

While some tenants have been able to secure new digs, others haven’t been so lucky, including the gut-busting favourite Gumshara ramen.

A post on the restaurant’s Instagram this week announced that its final service would be on Sunday, August 27 and at this time, owner Mori Higashida has not yet found an appropriate alternative.

The development application lodged by Elegant Dixon Property Pty Limited in 2020 posed the demolition of the existing building at 413-415 Sussex Street and construction of a 17 storey mixed use development with two basement levels and a communal rooftop garden.

The development includes four levels of retail provision, conservation works to the existing buildings at 82-84 Dixon Street, and 306 student boarding rooms which we’re confident won’t lead to rental exploitation or Airbnb nightmares.
