We waited 2 hours to try Sydney's new Cinnabon, here's what we thought

Cinnabon, Sydney supplied

Sydneysiders no longer need to cross state lines to get their sticky fingers on “the world’s best cinnamon scrolls”.

The sweet buns are now available to try at Darling Square, where Sydney’s first store opened over the weekend.

The Seattle-based bakery chain launched in Queensland in 2020, before rolling out to Victoria and finally, New South Wales.

Sydneysiders showed up to the grand opening in droves, with wait times spiralling to two hours or more.

Cinnabon supplied

The Darling Square menu consists of three items – the Cinnabon ($8), Caramel Pecanbon ($8.50) and Chocobun ($8.50), which come in a regular size as well as the Minibon version ($6.50). The scrolls are cooked in store every half hour, ensuring they’re always hot and fresh.

After a two-hour wait, our Cinnabon arrives soft and gooey with warm cream cheese frosting dripping from the sides. The first bite was satisfying, but by the fourth, the intense, cloying sweetness had us feeling a bit sick.

If you can’t be persuaded to try a local version (Sonoma’s morning buns are definitely better, as is everything at AP Bakery), then make sure you order the original Cinnabon rather than the Minibon, which was dry and barely had any frosting on top.

As for the Caramel Pecanbon, it had an extra swirl of caramel sauce (which it didn’t really need) and no pecans, which we can only assume were accidentally left off. Despite being advertised, the Chocobon is not yet available.

While they certainly hit the sweet spot, there are better buns to be had in Sydney. In the two-hour wait time, you could even bake your own.
