The Manly bar you’ll be spending your winter in

Manly Greenhouse

A 400-seater, three-storey venue lands on the beachfront.

As reported earlier, there’s something big in the way of bars en route to Sydney’s North Shore. Manly Greenhouse is set to open on the Queen’s birthday weekend this June, a multi-storey beachfront bar and restaurant that comes courtesy of a team with a rather impressive resume. Manly Greenhouse will take over the former site of the Shore Club Hotel, owners Greg Anderson and Patricia Nunes will lead a team that includes general manager Craig Hemmings (formerly of Chin Chin), executive chef Colm Kennedy (of Hugo’s Manly fame), and bar manager, Rowan Vidler (ofPS40 and Lobo Plantation).

The venue itself will sit across three distinct levels, that will include a casual bar at street-level. There Italian fare has inspired the food on offer, with wood fired pizzas and classic dishes, from fried whole sardines to squid ink spaghetti promised.

Upstairs will be a little more refined – a grill restaurant centred around casual elegance. Most of the menu will be cooked on a charcoal grill, with highlights including aCape Grim sirloin and wood-fired Skull Island prawns. Lofi Wines co-founder James Audas has created a unique wine list to accompany, dominated by natural varieties and wines on tap.

The final tier of Manly Greenhouse will be a rooftop bar accompanied by panoramic ocean views. Vidler and his team have created an innovative list of seasonal cocktails to enjoy, with Friday night favourite the espresso martini available on tap.

Luchetti Krelle is in charge of the venue’s interiors, meaning that the space will no doubt be a stylish one. The firm has taken inspiration from greenhouse forms in their design of the 400-seater, decorating the three levels with a plethora of steel structures, transparent materials and abundant greenery that come courtesy of collaborations with plant specialists, The Plant Room and illustrator Beci Orphin.

“With three unique levels we hope to offer something for everyone – residents and visitors alike,” says general manager Craig Hemmings. “Together with Greg and Patricia we’ve worked hard to determine our definition of the ‘perfect local’ and execute that idea in our own way. We’ve given strong consideration to the food and drink, aiming to translate the nature of the seaside to each of our menus. Likewise, service will be affable, reflect the laid back location, and our ethos – to be open to all, for all occasions.” Manly Greenhouse will open on June 8, 2018.
