Every neighbourhood needs a great local eatery; a restaurant you can drop in to when you want to treat yourself without blowing the budget, or when you just want a night off from cooking. Little Social in Paddington is just that.
Taking over the site formerly housing Yard Bird Ale House on Given Terrace, the space has been given a mini makeover, making it more approachable and brighter, with white VJ walls meeting simple murals, soft pendant lights, a turquoise-tiled bar for a pop of colour, and a large covered terrace out the front, heated by gas braziers on cold winter nights.

Owner Adam Barrack (Peasant and Los Villanos, The Barracks, Paddington) wanted to play up the old Queenslander cottage feel that’s so prominent in the suburb to create a place that people would consider an extension of their home. And it’s worked.
Little Social is by no means fancy, but it’s comfortable and relaxed. The menu is just as laid back, with share-style dishes that tread a popular path to appeal to the masses. Think fish and chips, lamb skewers with tzatziki, meatballs in napoli sauce, and chicken wings.

There are also larger-style dishes, including barbecue pork spare ribs, and chicken roulade, or diners can choose either the deluxe or premium platter, loaded with a mix of small and large bites.
Velvet-centred, truffle-heavy pea and chorizo croquettes ($12) are pepped up with a paprika-heavy harissa mayo. Sand crab and corn fritters ($14) are a little light on the crab, but tasty enough thanks to a dill-dominated tartare sauce.
The broccolini with miso and toasted flaked almonds ($11) is a generous portion and would be a solid side if the butter and miso had actually melted into the veg rather than sitting as cold knobs on top.

While the roasted pumpkin moussaka ($21) is a homely vegetarian take on the classic Greek favourite.
Is it food to knock your socks off? No, but nor is it trying to be. It is simply hearty, solid fare that will please the general populace.
What is noteworthy, however, is the wine list. For a small suburban eatery, it punches above its weight, offering a tight but smart and well-rounded list of quality global wines — some organic and biodynamic — at an affordable price point.
With the addition of signature cocktails and mainstream and craft beer available on tap or by the can or bottle, Little Social is sure to find plenty of fans who will come for a drink and stay for a meal.
