Who knew there were so many plain yoghurts out there? We certainly didn’t before signing up to sample our way through what turned out to be 20 of the most popular brands, scoring each out of 10 for taste, texture and appearance. While it may have maxed out our dairy intake for the week, it also left us in no doubt of which brands are the dead-set legends. ‘No fat, no fun’, as one taster succinctly noted of this oddly lumpy offering. Another suggested that this would be the outcome if mozzarella and cottage cheese had a baby together. Hopefully they’ll just stay gouda friends. 1/10
Looks like Clag glue, a bit watery, not as coconutty as some, but also not overly yoghurty, either. The winning adjective here was ‘gloopy’. 2/10
Should yoghurt still come in pouches, once you’ve finished second grade? Bringing back more schoolyard memories, this overly thin, sour yoghurt also looked like the glue we used to use to stick Spice Girls pics onto our textbook covers. 2/10
A solid pot set looked promising, but yielded to the spoon too easily to reveal an overly chalky, ‘cheesy’ texture and ‘forgettable’ taste. 3/10
We really wanted to like this, being such fans of Meredith’s goat cheese, but the faint barn-yardy smell and chalky texture let this one down baa-adly, for all but one taster, who didn’t mind the savoury ’funk’. 3/10
Surprisingly sweet for a plain yoghurt, but also not very natural in taste, like the sugar is masking something. Low cream factor, too. 4/10
We had issues with pot-set sourness here, along with some rather unnerving cottage-cheesy clumpiness. 4/10
Very runny. Almost drinkable, in fact. And surprisingly high in sugar for something that’s supposed to be ‘good’ for you. 4/10
While this one scored points for the satisfaction factor of spooning into a fresh-opened perfectly set pot, it seems the sourness of pot-set yoghurt is too much for team delicious. 4/10
While this scored points for its thick consistency and smooth texture, it lost points on taste, with a distinct lack of tang. 5/10
We were all curious as to how oat milk would work in yoghurt, yet were pleasantly surprised. But it doesn’t really taste like yoghurt at all – it’s thin and sweet – and it looks a little like your mum’s moisturiser. 5/10
As one team member so aptly put it, the chalky aftertaste of this one was rather like how your mouth would feel after chewing a Quick-Eze tablet. Looks good in the tub, though. 5/10
This was almost unnaturally white in appearance, and also very coconutty in flavour, so probably best for smoothies and tropical desserts. 6/10
While most of us liked the satisfyingly thick and smooth texture, the overly sour taste of this offering saw it lose points. 6/10
This is a perfectly adequate yoghurt that ticks all the boxes, without setting off any fireworks. It’s like the yoghurt equivalent of that boyfriend you had back in your first year of uni – fairly inoffensive, not too thick, nice enough, but a bit wet. However, it’s excellent value: $3.80 for 1kg compared to $8 for 1kg for our highest-scoring Greek-style yoghurt. 6/10
