The sight that met us upon opening this can almost pushed us to the very limit, with its creamy sauce of liquefied mayonnaise. Luckily it came with crackers, which softened the blow slightly. How was it? Let’s just say that this particular experience is one that team delicious. won’t be repeating soon. 1/10

We almost had to abandon this budget buy due to a recalcitrant can opener. While we wouldn’t recommend you bring this one to work, if you’re making a big tuna mornay for the family, she’s definitely your gal. 2.5/10

Same flavour combo, basically same results, with the same sole staffer rating taste highly. So it’s obviously a matter of, well, taste. A close read of the label revealed 10% real lemon juice, bumping it just ahead of the lemon powder used in its competitor. 3.5/10

“Why is it grey?” asked one taster nervously, as we all hovered about, clutching our spoons. Things improved marginally once the tasting began, but not enough to save this particular can from a disappointing final score. 4/10

The home brand lost big points on appearance, faring only marginally better on texture, but rallied at the last with some above-average marks for taste. A safe and reliable budget bet, at the very least. 4/10

This can won’t be winning any beauty pageants, with low marks on appearance from the whole crew, who were starting to wonder how they were going to make it through the afternoon. It didn’t fare much better on taste or texture, either, except for a few rogue high scorers who gave it 6 or above. 4.5/10

This one had people excited, but then was unable to follow through, scoring mostly on looks, while the flavour failed to impress. However, this brand always wins on texture. 5/10

Straight off the bat, this one lost marks for an unappetising appearance, which was also slightly reflected in the eating experience, with the word “mealy” being bandied about. However, some team members ranked it strongly for taste. 5/10

This one from a very popular brand had us divided, with some rating appearance and texture very highly, and some of us unconvinced. Personal tastes split the scores here more than most, but a neutral taste was commented on across the board. 6/10

A solid performer across the board, this is a nice and chunky offering that would serve any sandwich well. With no oil or noticeable salt to mess with the taste, this is just what it says on the label. A good choice for when you want your proteins clean and quiet in the background, while your other ingredients play a starring role. 6.5/10

A relative newcomer to the tuna aisle, this one rated highly across all parameters. The light garlic flavour would make a pleasant addition to salads or toasties, although the soggy bits of garlic on top gave us pause. 7/10

A surprise dark horse, this one scored highly to very highly with almost all tasters, with one even drawing a little star next to it on their score sheet. Give it a try if you’re looking for something new to spruce up your workaday sad salad. 7.5/10

The best-looking tuna of the bunch, even scoring a few perfect 10s. The texture here is also a winner, but the taste was difficult to ascertain due to the overwhelmingly strong oil flavour. Once drained (very well), a tasty all-rounder. 7.5/10

One of the most popular flavours of one of the most popular brands, this mildly spiced number scored high for looks with good, flaky texture; and for the taste of the oil, infused with a whole chilli. 8/10
