With Easter a mere 12 weeks away, our supermarkets have been gearing up for bun season big time, with fresh batches of hot crossed delights popping up in stores before Santa Claus even had a chance to take his boots off. Along with the beloved traditional fruit bun, newer favourites like the more decadent chocolate and the denuded fruit-free hot cross bun (blasphemy!) have returned to shelves, as have travesties like the Vegemite hot cross bun which, in this writer’s humble opinion, should be outlawed. What bunstrosity can we expect next – coriander?

Joining the bun brigade this year is Woolworths’ fairy bread hot cross bun. Each bun comes with a pink cross and a packet of 100s and 1000s, so you can butter your bun and sprinkle it any which way you like. Woolies’ 2024 bun line-up also sees the return of apple cinnamon and Cadbury Caramilk buns, as well as brioche Cadbury chocolate buns.
