The Ekka has been hit by possibly the most devastating news imaginable (okay, it’s bad but really that bad?) with the iconic Bertie Beetle showbags in short supply. Words by Matty Holdsworth.

A honeycomb shortage has caused supply chain issues for the Ekka’s iconic Bertie Beetle showbag, sparking fears they may run out.

RNA showbags and rides director Brendan Williams said the Bertie Beetle sales had been well up on previous years.

Mr Williams said despite a daily semi trailer dropping off hundreds of Bertie Beetle bags a day, he said it might not last until Sunday.

He urged punters to not leave it to the last minute, particularly with the masses expected to swarm in for People’s Day on Wednesday.

“We have got what we have got, there’s no more we can bring in,” Mr Williams said.

“We are OK but I wouldn’t leave it to the last days.

“It’s going to be a bigger problem for our next shows in Adelaide and Melbourne but yeah, I don’t know if we will get through this year’s.”
