Brace yourself, Polly Waffles are coming back

Polly-Waffles

This year is already looking to be our favourite.

For the first time in almost a decade, Polly Waffle bars are set to return to confectionery shelves across the country.

The iconic marshmallow encased in waffle wafer and chocolate was once the firm favourite among Australians, until production ceased in 2009. But now, thanks to one South Australian company, the bar could be back in supermarkets and newsagents as early as later this year.

Robern Menz, the family owned business behind the venture, acquired the brand, trademark and recipe to the beloved bar from Nestlé, with plans for the sweet treat to be made locally in its factory in Adelaide.

“With production ceasing almost 10 years ago, Polly Waffle has entered into the territory of Australian legend. There are kids and even young adults who don’t know what a Polly Waffle is and have never tasted it, but there are also many devoted fans who have been campaigning for its return,” says Robern Menz CEO, Phil Sims.

The business was also behind the deal from Nestlé, which saw Violet Crumble bars produced and distributed back on Australian shores in October 2018.

“Since taking over the Violet Crumble brand we have been bombarded with two distinct questions: when are you bringing back the bags of Violet Crumble and when are you bringing back Polly Waffle? There is even a Facebook page that has more than 55,000 members petitioning to ‘Bring Back The Polly Waffle,’” says Sims.

The Polly Waffle bar was first created by Melbourne-based business Hoadley’s Chocolate in 1947 but was then was handed over to UK-based confectioner Rowntrees in 1972, and then bought by Swiss-based Nestlé in 1988.

Now all that’s left to do is count down the days until we can get our hands on a Polly Waffle again.
