Come with empty bellies and big appetites.

If South Australia has been on your to-travel list for a while, book your ticket for early May next year. That’s because its premiere food festival, Tasting Australia is on from Friday, April 28 – Sunday, May 7.

The 10-day eating and drinking extravaganza will comprise over 150 events across the state, including Adelaide and some of the state’s pristine, remote regions. Tasting Australia, presented by RAA Travel, showcases the people and the produce of South Australia. From indulgent long lunches to wine, beer or spirit masterclass, there’s something for everyone according to co-festival director, Darren Robertson.

“Tasting Australia attracts some of the most talented chefs in the industry and we are thrilled to have an exciting line-up of international, national and local South Australian chefs in the program,” he says.

International chefs include Heidi Bjerkan from Norway and James Lowe and Gill Meller from the UK. They’ll be joined by local chefs including Karen Martini, Paul Carmichael, Justin James and Jake Kellie.

“The partnership between local food producers and venues including working farms, breweries drink makers and tourism operators is what makes this event so special,” Robertson says.

To make the most of it, we recommend checking out the festival hub, Town Square, in Adelaide and also booking events at regional locations.

Our pick is Tasting Australia Airlines, which flies you to the Flinders Rangers for an overnight stay and dinner by Africola’s Duncan Welgemoed and Marque’s Mark Best. The next day, head to Kangaroo Island where five chefs, including Three Blue Ducks’ Mark LaBrooy, will take you on a foodie adventure.

Or A Taste of Streaky Bay, where Lyndey Milan will prepare a four-course feast on the town’s beautiful foreshore. Don’t forget the Town Square events, in Victoria Square. It’s the place to discover new food and drink vendors and will be home to the Storyteller Series.

It will also host Wine! Wine! Party! Party! the festival’s opening night extravaganza, and the Chef’s Table series, where you can get up close and personal with chefs including Simon Bryant in the purpose-built, 20-person dining room.

Sydneysiders can get a taste (pun intended) at the Rocks this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Taste of Tasting Australia will take over Hickson Road Reserve to offer a glimpse of what you can expect from South Australia’s producers. Sip Barossa reds, cheers Adelaide Hills gin and sample gourmet delights ahead of the festival in April.

Tickets go on sale today. For more information, head to tastingaustralia.com.au.
