Who's keen?
Another day, another weird viral food trend from TikTok. This one involves putting mustard on watermelon, and as strange as that might sound, apparently it’s an incredible combination. We tried it, so you don’t have to.
The trend seems to have been started when singer-songwriter Lizzo duetted a video by a TikTok user known as @yayayayummy.
Although it sounds random, there is a method to the madness. You can’t just whack any old mustard on your melon and hope for the best.
The original video suggests that French’s yellow mustard is the essential ingredient that makes the combination so flavourful.

Naturally, being the adventurous foodies that we are, we had to try it for ourselves.
Equipped with the juiciest watermelon we could find, and a bottle of French’s yellow mustard, we put the new viral food trend to the test. After slicing up the watermelon and drizzling it with mustard, the delicious. TikTok team went ahead and took tentative bites.
Is it weird? Absolutely. Is it good? Also yes.

Ultimately, as much as we’d love to rubbish this weird viral food trend, it’s actually pretty tasty!
It’s a little like those summer-time throw-together BBQ salads, which pair pomegranate, pear or mango with rocket and balsamic vinegar. The sweetness of the watermelon pairs perfectly with the vinegary tang of the yellow mustard, creating a flavour that’s cool, warm, tangy and sweet.
Granted, it’s probably not going on the “essential groceries” shopping list every single week, but if we happen to find both ingredients in the refrigerator at the same time… you betchya!
