It's Bali, but not as you know it: discover a designer-turned-hotelier's guide to Uluwatu

Uluwatu-1

George Gorrow guides you to the best of Uluwatu, Bali.

When a prominent designer turns his focus to becoming a hotelier, you know the accommodation offering’s aesthetic will be nothing short of visually pleasing. The creative eye behind The Slow, Canggu, George Gorrow, is all-too familiar with Bali’s hotspots. Here, he shares his guide to Uluwatu, where he’ll be launching his next site in 2021. This is where to go when you’re traversing this burgeoning surf-side region of the island.

Best hotel
The Slow Uluwatu will make its debut in 2021 but, until then, Uluwatu Surf Villas is great. Run by surfers it sits right on a cliff with private access to the best waves. They also have the best yoga in the area and the villas are all very private and reasonably priced.
Best restaurant lunch
Alila Uluwatu is hands down the best restaurant on the hill for me. They have two restaurants – one is Western and one is Indonesian. If you like spice then I highly recommend the Indonesian offer, everything on the menu is great – you can’t go wrong with the food and the view and interiors are really worth absorbing.
Best restaurant dinner
There’s a little place called Casa Asia in Bingin Beach for me – Bingin Beach for me is the place to be. It’s the new hot spot for sure. As for Casa Asia it serves pretty good basic Italian, pastas and pizza both worth trying. They also have quite a good gin collection.
Uluwatu-2
Best for coffee with a view
Mana is the restaurant that is part of the Uluwatu Surf Villas complex. It’s a great place to let time slide by and enjoy a coffee while you watch the lines of swell roll through Uluwatu.
Best for a beer
There’s nothing more relaxing than drinking an ice cold beer while watching people get barreled. Kelly’s Warung in Bingin is right on the sand and offers a front row seat to the infamous Bingin surf break.
Best surf spot
The Uluwatu region known as the Bukit is home to the best waves on the island. For me the spot is always Uluwatu, with a special love for Racetracks. (Son it’s a wave) You might have to fight against the current a little depending on tide, but you can often get it to yourself.
Best breakfast
Close to both Bingin and Padang Padang you can have a good surfers breakfast at The Loft. I get the breakfast burritos with hot sauce and I like to have it with a health shot; turmeric, ginger, and a special anti-inflammatory mix.
Best view
Sunset Point, owned by a local surfer family, is one of my favourite low key spots to watch the sunset. There it’s super lo-fi, just you sitting on the grass, looking over surf spot Temples. The place has a lot of charm and feels like old Bali.
