Currently, fashion exhibitions are taking over the art scene Down Under. From Gucci Garden Archetypes to See LV and Zampatti Powerhouse, the list keeps on growing. This weekend a stylish new exhibition will join the line up, Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse. 

Alexander McQueen (1969 – 2010) was one of the most significant forward thinkers in the fashion world throughout the late 20th century. In this exhibition at the NGV International (NGV) his groundbreaking ideas and designs have been brought to life once again. It marks the first major Australian exhibition to explore McQueen’s work. 

Fashion lovers will be able to get an up close look at more than 120 of the iconic designer’s garments and accessories, as well as more than 80 historical artworks that range from paintings to sculpture and give you an insight into the myriad of reference points the designer was influenced by.

McQueen was an avid consumer of art, design, literature and history, which was often reflected in his works. Take, some of his most controversial collections, like Highland Rape (autumn/winter 1995-1996) and the poetic The Widows of Culloden (autumn/winter 2006-2007), both of which were a nod to McQueen’s Scottish heritage and featured the tartan pattern, which is often seen on kilts. 

The Melbourne exhibition is a partnership between the NGV and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), both of which are home to some of the most prized McQueen garments, drawings, designs and artefacts. This will be one of the only times you can see such a wide range of McQueens work in one space, so don’t commit a fashion faux pas and miss out.
