Another day, another social media trend. And this time, the TikTokers are coming for your morning brew.
‘Cloud coffee’ is the latest viral drink doing the rounds online. This sweet and creamy camera-ready concoction adds a tropical twist to a regular iced coffee with the addition of coconut water, which fans of the drink say gives it a hydrating and nutritious boost.

What is cloud coffee?
Cloud coffee is coconut water topped with a frothy ‘cloud’ of coffee and milk or non-dairy creamer. It’s a spin on the Dalgona whipped coffee trend that was doing the rounds in 2020. Cafes are taking the idea and running with it, including North Adelaide’s Cabana Cafe, which offers an iced strawberry matcha cloud, a tiramisu cloud iced latte and a Dubai cloud latte – inspired by the viral chocolate – on its menu. A quick search on TikTok will show that there are countless others out there getting creative with the cloud, too.

Is cloud coffee good for you?
It depends. It’s true that coconut water is a good source of electrolytes. But if you’re using sweetened coconut water, you’ll just be adding extra sugar to your daily intake, and coconut water isn’t any more hydrating than regular water. Coffee itself has been shown to offer some health benefits, and of course, a splash of dairy is good for topping up your daily calcium intake. But overall, if you’re looking for a super-healthy beverage to start your day, you’re better off opting for a green smoothie, a vegetable juice or a green tea.

How to make cloud coffee
To make your own cloud coffee, fill a tall glass with ice and pour over a good slug of coconut water. Then, in a separate container, add some espresso (or instant coffee if you don’t need to be fancy) and a splash of your favourite milk or cream and use a milk frother to get it all nice and fluffy. Then simply pour this over the top of your coconut milk et voilà! You have yourself a cloud coffee.
