Forecast: moderate, with no chance of a hangover.
No and low-alcohol alternatives have come a long way in a relatively short time. A decade ago, if you wanted a proper drink that wouldn’t put you over the limit, your only choices were light beer or, well, light beer. Now there’s a veritable cornucopia of quality alcohol-free spirits, beers and wines to choose from, as well as countless low-alcohol offerings, from seltzers to champagne. And this summer, these temperate tipples are getting their very own Big Day Out.
Melbourne-based events company REVEL (the team behind Pinot Palooza and Mould cheese festival) has announced its latest tasting event, Picolo – Australia’s first-ever low and zero-alcohol drinks festival. It might seem odd to name a relatively booze-free festival after a drinking game, but there you have it.

The event aims to shine a spotlight on the new wave of artisan distillers, brewers, movers and makers that make up the low and zero-alcohol industry in Australia and New Zealand. There’ll be everything from a live cocktail competition, talks and masterclasses to “beersketball”, a rollerskating rink and a limbo challenge, which will no doubt be a doddle when you’re not three sheets to the wind.
Piccolo will be held over two sessions (12pm or 5pm) on Saturday, February 11 at Melbourne’s Timber Yard. Tickets are $35 + booking fee. For more info, or to book a spot, head to the festival website.
