Sydney’s vegan food scene has received a game-changing addition as Mr Charlie’s, hailed as ‘the vegan McDonald’s,’ makes its debut in the heart of Redfern.

After gaining a huge following in Los Angeles in 2022 and then expanding to San Francisco, the restaurant chain has set up shop Down Under, promising a tongue-in-cheek parody of the Golden Arches.

So what makes Mr Charlie’s so special? The answer lies in its approach to plant-based cuisine. The menu is everything you expect at a classic fast-food joint, revamped to be entirely vegan. From the “Not a Cheeseburger” to the “Not a Hamburger,” a cute version of the Happy Meal – that would be, the Frowny Meal – and the litigious “Big Chuck”, Mr Charlie’s offers dishes that prove being vegan doesn’t mean grazing on lettuce all day.

Emulating the iconic McDonald’s colour scheme with bright yellows and reds, Mr Charlie’s playfully parodies its fast-food counterpart while making a statement about cruelty-free dining.

But the story behind Mr Charlie’s isn’t just about food and fun; it’s about the incredible journey of its co-founder, Taylor McKinnon. Only eight years ago, McKinnon was living on the streets of Los Angeles, grappling with the hardships of a difficult upbringing. However, his life took a turn when he found support from a charitable organisation dedicated to helping people in crisis.

McKinnon’s transformative journey inspired him to create Mr Charlie’s, not just as a restaurant but as a platform for social and environmental change. Employees of Mr Charlie’s all come from tough backgrounds, fusing social enterprise with compassion, innovation, and resilience. Oh, and some damn good “chicken” nuggets are the cherry on top.

After briefly living in Sydney, McKinnon decided on Redfern for the chain’s first Australian outpost due to its cultural significance as an Indigenous hub, and McKinnon is already working with the Aboriginal Employment Service to empower and uplift the country’s Aboriginal communities.
