Now that’s pie with purpose.

Now that winter is here, the allure of staying indoors of an evening, wearing your fleeciest hoodie and trackies, becomes all but irresistible – like a siren’s call coming from the very depths of your snuggliest blankie. But as we all know, the true purpose of winter is also to eat many good things, so that we may survive the long, harsh, cold months ahead, like a hibernating bear. Except less likely to kill anyone.

This is where Gelato Messina’s cult bake-at-home cookie pie comes in. It’s the ultimate warm and gooey sweet indulgence that doesn’t require you to leave the house after the feeble sun has crept its shivering way below the distant horizon.

First launched in 2021, the OG cookie pie has been reimagined with many enticing limited-edition forms, but the mighty Messina masters’ latest iteration may be its greatest yet. It’s warm pie, with big chunks of chocolate. But not just any chocolate – it’s chocolate that does good.

The new twist on the cult cookie pie is now packed with pieces of Tony’s Chocolonely milk and dark chocolate. Tony’s Chocolonely is the chocolate brand that’s on a mission to change the chocolate industry – it was founded as a protest against the human exploitation that still exists in the cocoa industry. The brand sources ethically and traces its cocoa beans from farm to bar, while also working with cocoa farmers to strengthen farming groups and cooperatives and raising global awareness of issues such as child labour and modern slavery, as well as deforestation in key cocoa-producing nations. By choosing Tony’s Chocolonely chocolate, you’re helping contribute to a more equally divided cocoa chain. Because for every bean in every bar, cocoa farmers get paid the price for a living income.

This is, indeed, pie with purpose. It’s golden on the outside, gooey on the inside, and designed to be baked fresh at home. And it’s being launched on World Chocolate Day – Monday, July 7.

Made entirely in-house by Messina’s pastry team, each cookie pie is crafted with the same care and obsession for quality as Messina’s famous gelato. It’s the ultimate stay-in dessert – served warm (and best paired with a scoop of ice cream… or Messina gelato).

Each pie is priced at $25, with bundle options available, including 500ml, 1L or 1.5L tubs of Messina gelato. To celebrate the launch, Messina has also created a limited-edition gelato flavour that pairs perfectly with the pie – Brownie Points: salted milk chocolate gelato with lashings of caramel and Tony’s double choc brownie.

The Gelato Messina cookie pie will be on sale from July 7, 2025 in all Messina stores and via delivery channels. But it’s limited release. First come, first served. There will also be single-serve warm cookie pies available in all Messina stores (apart from Circular Quay and The Star) from 5pm each night from Monday July 14 during winter, for $12, including a scoop on top. Brownie Points will be available in all Messina stores from 12 July for one week or until sold out. For more info, head to gelatomessina.com/messinatonys
