So wrong, and yet so right.

Australia can proudly lay claim to some of the world’s greatest inventions. Wi-fi. The bionic ear. Vegemite. Drop bears. But there is one Aussie invention that has taken the world by storm in the past few years, and it has just come to our attention: the Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich.

Who invented the Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich?

This is not a secret McDonald’s menu item, but a menu hack dreamt up by Australian content creator Kelly Arvan, of the @arvanfamily in Melbourne. In 2023, Kelly posted a video of herself, in her car, eating two hash browns sandwiched together with a big smoosh of Oreo McFlurry, saying that she had been craving it the night before, and that “nothing else goes close to it”.

The creation has since gone viral across the globe, with other TikTokers and websites recreating the snack and marvelling at the strangely satisfying salty and sweet, crunchy and smooth, hot and cold combination. It even made it onto the Today show in the US.

Can I get the Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich in Australia?

McDonald’s Australia actually commented on Arvan’s post, saying “wait that looks delicious”, although it stopped short of saying that it might make it on the menu someday. And there’s a good reason for this – it’s not exactly a straightforward process to make one.

Creating a Hash Brown McFlurry Sandwich requires a combination of timing and luck, as it calls for freshly cooked hot hash browns and still-frozen McFlurry. You need to arrive before they stop serving hash browns – which, if your nearest Macca’s doesn’t serve hash browns all day – is usually at 11:30am. You also need to arrive after they start serving McFlurries, which is ostensibly at around 10:30am. But – and here’s the kicker – you also need to arrive on a day that the McFlurry machine is actually working. Which it usually isn’t.

So if you want to have a crack at trying this viral snack for yourself, maybe call ahead to avoid disappointment.
