We tried the viral pineapple and grape ice creams. Here’s what they really taste like

The good, the bad and the purple.

It’s officially ice cream season, and this summer, everyone is going crazy for a couple of iced confections shaped like fruit. Much like the previously viral Propitious Mango ice cream that went bonkers last year (and is now available in Woolies), this season’s big hits are a pineapple-shaped sorbet and a bunch-of-grapes-shaped ice cream.

These fun fruity delights on sticks appear to be produced by several different mysterious companies, including the makers of the original mango ice cream, but all come with the same amount of excessive packaging.

Once we managed to wrestle our ice creams out of their cardboard box, plastic dome and plastic stand, we were ready to taste them. Sadly, by this stage, the pineapple one had already started to melt. So we tasted that one first, and were pleasantly surprised by how refreshing it was – the sorbet (or ‘flavored slush’ as our product was described) was smooth, and the pineapple flavour was quite realistic and not too sweet. A definite summer winner.

Onto the grape, which would probably remind any proctologists who might be reading this about that haemorrhoidectomy they have scheduled for tomorrow morning. This has a deep-purple outer shell, which you crack open to reveal a paler mauve ice cream within.

How does it taste? Like fake grape. Like deepfake grape. Like someone tried describing how grape tastes over the phone and it was a really bad connection. Like grape flavour’s unemployed second cousin. Like how disappointment would taste if it were purple.

So yeah, we weren’t huge fans.

The horror…

Where can you find the viral pineapple and grape ice creams?

You can find the pineapple and grape ice creams, along with mango, strawberry, peach and lemon versions (and a particularly freaky ice block that looks like a piece of raw steak) at specialty Asian supermarkets and Asian grocery stores such as Gong Grocer or Tong Li Supermarket in Sydney; Foodle Supermarket or Tang – The Asian Food Emporium in Melbourne; Together Mart in Adelaide or Willetton Oriental Groceries in Perth.

Keep an eye on social media, as these shops will usually post when they’re in stock and people will also often post when they find them elsewhere. But remember that these products sell out fast, so always call ahead to check before you make any trips across town just for an ice cream. Especially if it’s for the grape one. Actually, if it’s for the grape one, just stay home.
