A new park is in the plans for the rejuvenation of the Blackwattle Bay area.
The NSW Government is serious about making corners of Sydney previously inaccessible to the public, not just accessible, but useful to city dwellers. Need proof? Just take a look at Marrinawi Cove, which opened early this year, Penrith’s pop-up beach and the confirmed development of Callan Park Tidal Pool in Lilyfield and harbourside park in Barangaroo. We’re here for it.
So what’s next? The NSW Government has its sights set on the regeneration of the Blackwattle Bay area. The all-new Sydney Fish market has been under construction for years and is set to open in 2024. Along with the new fish market, homes, workplace and public spaces are intended to complete the redesign of the area. Included in this rejuvenation is a new and sprawling one-hectare-plus park.
Bank Street Park will take up a corner of the harbour that sits under the ANZAC Bridge and that’s been fenced off to the public for more than a decade. Within the grounds of the park there’ll be fitness stations, a multipurpose court, playgrounds for the tots and a community building that will be home to a cafe and marina office.
The park will be a go-to for those looking for water access. Keen kayakers, canoeists and paddle-boarders will be able to enter the way from Bank Street Park once complete. The park’s walkway will also link up with the emerging harbourside walkway, which will run for 15 kilometres from Woolloomooloo to Rozelle Bay when complete.
Designs are underway and will be confirmed early 2024. We’ll keep you posted as more details are released.
