Outdoor lunch plans? Here’s the 2025 Christmas Day weather

Joy to the world, it’s looking like (mostly) clear skies for Christmas, across Australia.

Nothing can ruin Christmas Day in Australia more than the weather (not even a collapsed pavlova). So if you have plans for a festive lunch outdoors you might want to keep tabs on the weather to ensure it’s not a wash out. Good news: it’s looking merry and bright for most cities (but sorry, Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin). Here is the current weather forecast for Christmas Day across Australia’s capital cities.

Sydney, New South Wales 

  • Temperature: Highs of 23°C, lows of 18°C
  • Weather: Cloudy and not as warm; a little rain in the morning followed by a shower in spots in the afternoon
Christmas Day weather in Sydney is going to be cool, with possible showers throughout the day. AccuWeather is predicting 2.5 hours of precipitation over the day so outdoor plans might not be safe, best to have a back option that doesn’t involve sitting outside. There’s still time, things could change. We’ll keep you posted.

Melbourne, Victoria 

  • Temperature: Highs of 21°C, lows of 12°C
  • Weather: Bright periods, becoming cloudy in the evening

Christmas Day weather in Melbourne will be sunny and, thankfully, rain free. AccuWeather is predicting temps to reach 21°C, which is perfect for al fresco dining and we’ll cheers to that. The UV index is looking to be around 10, though, so make sure you incorporate a hat into your Christmas outfit planning.

Adelaide, South Australia 

  • Temperature: Highs of 26°C, lows of 12°C
  • Weather: Long sunny spells

Christmas Day in Adelaide will be hot with sun popping through the clouds throughout the day. AccuWeather is forecasting that the RealFeel temperature will reach highs of 28°C so keep guests well hydrated and provide plenty of shade for your outdoor set up. 

Brisbane, Queensland 

  • Temperature: Highs of 30°C, lows of 22°C
  • Weather: Humid with periods of rain and a thunderstorm

According to AccuWeather Christmas Day in Brissy is going to be a wash out. It is predicted to rain for most the day. That doesn’t mean you’ll be chilly, though. With that humidity, temps are predicted to feel hotter than they are – up to 37°C. Unless things change from now to December 25, plan to feast indoors.

Perth, Western Australia 

  • Temperature: Highs of 38°C, lows of 22°C
  • Weather: Very hot with sizzling sunshine

Christmas Day in Perth is predicted to be hot, hot, hot. AccuWeather is forecasting a sunny and clear day. The ReelFeel temp is predicted to reach 43°C so be sure you have plenty of shade and cold water hydrating guests if you lunch al fresco. Or, in the most likely case it is overwhelming;y hot, consider having a back-up plan that involves aircon. 

Hobart, Tasmania 

  • Temperature: Highs of 17°C, lows of 10°C
  • Weather: Sunny periods

Christmas Day weather in Hobart is looking to be sunny, which is great if you’re planning on dining outdoors. It won’t be too hot so you won’t have to worry about the bubbles going warm.

Darwin, Northern Territory 

  • Temperature: Highs of 32°C, lows of 24°C
  • Weather: Cloudy with a couple of thundery showers

Christmas Day weather in Darwin is looking to be hot and wet. Accuweather is predicting the RealFeel temperature to reach up to 38°C. Best to plan for an indoors lunch where your guests will stay cool and dry. 

Canberra, ACT

  • Temperature: Highs of 25°C, lows of 10°C
  • Weather: Mostly sunny

Christmas Day weather in Canberra is looking good if you’re considering an outdoor lunch affair. It will be hot, according to Accuweather, which is predicting ReelFeel to reach highs of 31°C. Be sure to keep the wine on ice.
