Chicken or fish?
Thai Airways is offering travel-starved foodies a taste of in-flight dining, courtesy of a new pop up restaurant that’s serving plane food on terra firma.
Last week, more than one hundred grounded travellers rocked up to the pop-up restaurant in Bangkok, which is serving in-flight meals in a repurposed cafeteria that’s designed to mimic the in-fight experience.

Created and operated by Thai Airways, which has been grounded throughout COVID, and recently confirmed it would remain so through October, the restaurant is staffed by cabin crew, and serves the fine in-flight meals for which Thai Airways is renowned.

The space in the Thai Airways offices in Bangkok has been completed decked out with plane seats, along with “spare parts from engines, windows and fan blades,” according to Thai Airways Catering’s managing director Varangkana Luerojvong, who spoke with Reuters last week.

QR codes give the visitors a little insight as to how each of the featured parts operates and what it controls, allowing diners to savour a little aircraft trivia alongside their single serving of fish or chicken.
The restaurant is so popular that’s it’s serving around 2,000 meals per day, providing welcome relief for the airline, which filed for bankruptcy protection back in May.

The service was initially offered as a premium home delivery menu meal box back in April.
Thai Airways isn’t the only airline that’s offered grounded travellers a taste of plane food during COVID-19 travel restrictions either. Cathay Pacific began selling its in-flight meals to Hong Kong staff back in July, meanwhile GNS nuts, which provides in-flight snacks to United and American Airlines, also started selling their products online.
