But who’s yer man over there?
The luck of the Irish appears to have landed Down Under, with the Shamrock Shake finally available in McDonald’s restaurants across Australia for a limited time from today. And not a moment too soon, with St Patrick’s Day just around the corner.
Macca’s fans have long been begging for the Shamrock Shake to come to our shores, with the lurid green bevvie being a popular seasonal addition to McDonald’s menus in the US, Canada and Ireland for years. Now the powers that be have bowed to the relentless pressure, with Amanda Nakad, marketing director of menu and brand for McDonald’s Australia saying, “When the Shamrock Shake makes its annual appearance across the globe, the response we get from fans here in Australia is overwhelming. So now we’re painting the town GREEN! Head into your local restaurant right now to give this iconic shake a go before it’s gone.”

The Shamrock Shake is – unsurprisingly – mint flavoured, and comes with a whipped cream topping. What is surprising is that the shake’s arrival this year also heralds the rare appearance of the hitherto little-known member of the McDonaldland clan – Uncle O’Grimacey. Grimace’s Irish uncle, Uncle O’Grimacey has not been seen for the last 40 years, and there’s apparently also a Grandma Winky and aunts Millie and Tillie lurking about somewhere, too. Perhaps they’ve heard about the huge success of the Grimace Shake, and are after their own 15 minutes of fame.

The Shamrock Shake launches on Wednesday, March 5, and is available for a limited time only, while stock lasts, in-store and via kiosk, drive-thru and through the MyMacca’s app.
